Hard on systems, soft on people
10ish”x9” for yellow background, 12”x9” for white background
———————————
this phrase has a million interpretations, but here’s what it means to me:
most institutions and systems are not capable of transformation, but all humans are.
humans have an inherent capacity to learn, grow, and change. systems built on colonialism and white supremacy cannot be reformed. and the more time we spend trying to reform these systems, the less we invest in each other’s capacity to skill up and get organized.
soft on people does not mean “be nice to everyone all the time” but rather treating each other as if we’ll be in relationship for the foreseeable future. it means saving our powerful destructive energy for systems beyond repair, and recognizing that all humans are doing our best with the tools we have access to. when empires fall, relationships will remain.
